October 28 GOLDEN CIRCLE
Tuesday
Today we will enjoy a full day tour of the Golden Circle. Our excursion captures the essence of Iceland in all its awesome beauty. Like the first Viking settlers who traveled once a year from all over Iceland to the plains of Pingvellir National Park (Thingvellir), we will visit a remarkable geological site and the most historic site on the island. Pingvellir is the site of the world’s oldest democratic parliament, the Althing, founded in 930. Pingvellir, located by Lake Pingvallavatn, the largest lake on the island, is now a national park. The beautiful canyon running through the park is actually the meeting point of two of the Earth’s tectonic plates. Pingvellir’s combination of natural phenomena and historical significance make it inseparable from the bedrock of Icelandic national life.
Then we continue to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Here you will see thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down in double falls into a deep gorge. Only a few minutes drive from Gullfoss is the famous Great Geyser, which has given name to hot springs all over the world. You will see one of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, spouting up 98.5 feet. After lunch at a local restaurant, we visit Kerid, a lake-filled extinct volcanic crater. From here we drive over to the beautiful site and former bishopric Skalholt with its impressive church. Thereafter we stop by the volcanic crater Kerid and proceed back to Reykjavik in the afternoon.
