Dear World Travelers:
In 2007 as Romania entered the European Union, we offered our first tour to this oft-misunderstood country, steeped in legend. The trip was a great success as guided by our gracious guide, Maria Burs-Popesco. Maria also works with Smithsonian Institute but actually favors our itinerary since we incorporate magnificent scenery traversing the Eastern Carpathian Mountains to Moldavia and Orthodox Romania’s masterpieces, the Painted Churches and monasteries of Bucovina.
If you missed the trip last year, we have it for you again in 2008. The itinerary is exquisite and includes four UNESCO World Heritage Sites as shown on our map below. The pictures shown in the brochure are the ones I took on our 2007 tour. If you would like to see more, let us know and we’ll send you a link to our scrapbook.
Romania is an interesting amalgam of various distinct cultures- Orthodox Romanian, German, Hungarian, Roma (gypsies) and direct descendents of the Huns - the Szekler. In Wallachia (Vallachia) we arrive in Bucharest and view its impressive architecture: Cotrocieni Palace; Mogosoaia Palace; and Palace of Parliament, the second largest building in the world;
Heading north to the Transylvanian Alps, stop and dine at Hurez Monastery, with its magnificent Brancovan stone carvings and paintings. Explore fortified towns built by German Saxon settlers in Transylvania during the Middle Ages: Sibiu (Cultural Capital of Europe 2007); Sighisoara, perhaps the best preserved and still inhabited medieval town in Europe; Biertan, a fortified church built by the village community against raids by Turks and Tartars during the Middle Ages; and Brasov with it’s beautiful Black Church. We won’t miss the Bran Medieval Castle, the legendary home of Count Dracula, as well as the true birthplace of Vlad the Impaler in Sighisoara.
You will delight in sumptuous meals with local delicacies, and be entertained with folk dancing and music. What a joy to hear Enesco’s Romanian Rhapsody performed on home soil.
Please join our small group of no more than 15 travelers led by Dr. Robert Blackey and Maria Burs-Popescu as we bring to life the colorful Legends & Traditions of Romania!
